Israel vows to prevent Palestinian efforts to become full UN members

detik.com  Israel vows to prevent any attempt by Palestinians to gain full membership in the United Nations (UN). This was conveyed after the Palestinian authority said it would submit a request for full membership to the UN next month.

The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported, as reported by AFP on Friday (12/28/2018), the Palestinian Authority's Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said he would submit a request to the UN Security Council for full UN membership next month.

Al-Maliki said he would travel to New York, United States (US) - UN headquarters - to directly submit the request. But it is still unclear whether the Palestinian request will be voted on by the Security Council in the near future.

The Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, said in a statement that Israel was preparing to prevent the Palestinian effort. "We are preparing to stop the initiative," Danon said in a statement.

"Palestine pays terrorists and encourages violence but intends to become a UN member state," he added. Danon accused the Palestinian leader of being involved in "devastating policies that have driven terror attacks in the past."

Danon added that Israel was preparing to prevent the Palestinian effort 'in cooperation with the United States delegation'. Danon stressed that every step from Palestine to request full membership of the United Nations would face a veto from the US at the UN Security Council.

Under UN rules, the General Assembly must approve every request to become a UN member state, but before that request must be submitted by the UN Security Council. To win the approval of the UN Security Council, the Palestinians need at least 9 votes out of a total of 15 members of the UN Security Council and have not received a veto from five permanent member states.

The five permanent members of the UN Security Council consist of Britain, France, China, Russia and the US.

UN diplomats said that the Palestinian move to request full UN membership came as South Africa and Indonesia - two strong Palestinian supporters - prepared to occupy their seats as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council.

The UN Security Council is scheduled to hold a monthly meeting to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on January 22, 2019.  Also read: Palestinian teenagers were jailed for 35 years for stabbing in the West Bank

In 2012, Palestinians obtained the status of a non-member monitoring country. The decision regarding the status of Palestine was taken by the United Nations General Assembly, where no member country held veto power.

But the US vetoed the resolution of the question of Palestinian status. The veto is in line with the old US view that believes there should not be international recognition for the Palestinians until progress is made in peace efforts with Israel. (Nvc / rna)
